clicking and clacking

Forums
hello, on my 1955 single cyl es2 engine i have a double click sound on turning the engine over slowly. with the plug out . when i look at the push rod adjusters through the inspection cover the clicking noise seems to correspond with the exhaust push rod. roughly in the position indicated on the cam lobe in the photo. i have had all the head and piston plus liner and little end done some time ago. the problem is this click turns into a loud clacking noise when the engine is running .my thought are could it be cam wheel loose on its shaft.i have checked the push rod ends before now plus the cam wheel teeth seem to mesh ok. the pushrod adjustment is ok. been trying to find what it is for some time now. any thoughts. barry

could the valve lifter be too close to the rocker or the spring too weak?, this would give a click when running.

hello,  David.     thanks for that. i didnt think of the valve lifter . as a while ago i put a rubber type washer behind the lever to stop it rattling as it pushed in and out. but it must have fell out melted or the like. so will redo. after i had the head done the exhaust valve did sit on the lifter so removed the lifter and took some off it to create a gap and adjusted to suit. thanks,    barry

You shouldn't need to file the lifter, you can adjust it with the screw slot and clamp, the cable is counter intuitively fitted so the outer cable is attached to the lever and the nipple in the adjuster on the head. It can certainly clatter if its not adjusted correctly. Dan

hello Dan , yes i know what you mean. its just that there was no gap at all between the valve and the lifter. i couldnt see any other option really. i couldnt adjust it out. it works ok now though. thanks , barry

Hi Barry,            I agree with Dave and Dan, when the lifter spindle is fitted the arm should move several degrees either way with-out the cable attached. If the spindle is original, the valve might be too long or sunken into it's seat. Another cause may be the rocker arm is bent or faulty in some other respect.

hello, Richard thanks for that. it may be a case of something is bent. its hard to tell without comparing parts. i had the head done at pushrod performance. some while ago. i will run it see how it goes thanks,              barry

Any chance that the half-time pinion woodruff key is a sloppy fit?

thanks for that Ian,    with the job it has to do it may well be the case. i will have to have a look at some stage.    barry

hello,   just wondering. how are the cam wheels held onto the cam shafts are they a press fit or is there a key way . barry

... tracking down something similar on a Matchless G80. It turned out to be end float on the inlet cam.....

hello , thanks for that Ian. it could be the case with this.  i will have to delve more deeper. i didnt want to strip it down again but i think i am just being idle.  ive had the timing cover off one or two times attempting to cure an oil leak. now thats cured my attention was drawn to this noise. its all apart of the fun. barry

Barry, Cam wheels have a woodruff key, I know because I sheared one!  If Mike did the head I doubt the problem is there. Dan

thanks for that Dan .  thats what i thought about the head, thats why my thinking was towards the cam area.i will have a look at some stage with more of a focused approach. thanks    Barry
